These large searchlights were used both for illuminating targets and also for signaling. The shutters which can be seen inside the lens can be open and closed like blinds to allow signaling. As devices for target illumination, these devices were made obsolescent by radar. Radar not only have much longer range but also did not disclose the location of the ship conducting the search.
