The above web
pages contains a list of images of Japanese warship names and the equivalent
English name. The goal is to aid researchers identifying names of Japanese
warships from published material.
- The tables are set up with the first column listing the ship class followed
by the names of individual ships.
- Each ship name in English is followed immediately by the Japanese name.
If there are more than four ships in a class, the names wrap around to a
second line.
- Ship class with multiple ships names are sorted and listed alphabetically.
- Previous names of ships, if they exist are listed immediately below the
IJN ship name with the translation. These are in gray and smaller size to
denote that they are not the main IJN ship name.
- Ship without names such as planned ships with only number designations
are not listed. Submarines which also do not have names are also not listed.
- If a name has been used more than once, the specific occurrence is designated
by a number immediately following the name i.e. Chitose (II) = second occurrence
The source of the images of Japanese warship names is the Japanese
publication "Japanese Naval Vessels 1860-1945. Fukui Shizuo Collection".
To take advantage of the expertise of this tremendous publication, I have
also used the same ship classification as this book.
