Radar - Type 22 Surface Search

This was the standard surface search radar of the Imperial Japanese Navy in WWII. It had a maximum range of 35 km/22 miles (battleships), 20 km/12 miles (cruisers), and 17 km/7 miles (destroyers). The different ranges reflects the different height the radar could be mounted (i.e. higher = greater range). It was used for surface search but not fire control (of weapons). The instrument measured approximately 950 cm x 1425 cm (31.17 feet x 46.75 feet) and featured of two electromagnetic horns - the top one for receiving and the bottom one for transmitting.
