The 25 mm anti-aircraft gun was the standard AA weapon of the Japanese navy. It was a design adopted from one by the French gun maker Hotchkiss. It had a maximum range of about 7,500 meters (horizontal), and 5,500 meters (85 degree). This weapon came in a number of flavors - single (as depicted here), twin and triple gun mounts. Rate of fire was between 200 to 260 rounds per minute. The single mount was free swinging (not power operated) and was fired by one crewman who stood to the left side of the weapon against the harness. A second crewman stood to the right of the gun and acted as a loader. Each magazine held 15 rounds of ammunition. A firing handle with a large trigger was immediately to his right under the gun. The gun was aimed by sighting through the pin and targeting reticule immediately to the front of the crewman. Recoil was handled by two gas cylinders which is located on each side of the barrel. A flash suppresser was attached to the end of the barrel to minimize the blinding effects during night action and also acted as a muzzle brake to reduce the recoil.
